This is a most impressive display of digital artistry, and the thumbnail to the left just doesn't do it justice. The artist, using Photoshop and a graphics tablet, creates a digital image of Einstein. The whole thing is built up slowly, with ever more complex layers overlaying what was underneath.

200 comics in under 12 hours!

Of course, I'm not referring to Exotic Trousers' own Procrastinatorial Sim. I imagine Sim might be able to complete 200 comics in under 12 years. Maybe. Under extreme and unique circumstances.

No, I'm referring to a column from Cracked.com. Someone challenged Nedroid to complete 200 three panel comics as fast as he could, and he managed it in under 12 (admittedly non-consecutive) hours. Cracked.com have put them on show. There's four pages of this stuff, so set aside some time if you want to read all the comics.

Perry Bible Fellowship: The end is nigh

It seems that the exceptional Perry Bible Fellowship will be coming to an end this week. The author, Nicholas Gurewitch, said:

"I'm making this decision for a variety of reasons, but mainly because I want to do other things besides be a cartoonist"

Well, good luck Nicholas. PBF has been a breath of fresh air, and many people will be sorry to see it go. I'm afraid Sim does intend to keep publishing his work here on Exotic Trousers, although it seems it will be at increasingly longer and irregular intervals.

It seem that I was happily misinformed about the demise of the Perry Bible Fellowship. The cartoon will continue, but not as regularly as before:

"It's really not as big a deal as it might seem," Nicholas said today. "I'll simply be producing comics at a pace I'm more comfortable with."

A bit like Sim, then, although I suspect that Sim's output of toons could get considerably more "comfortable" if he was allowed to.

War Of The Worlds

I've just discovered an exceptional illustrated rendition of H.G.Well's War Of The Worlds. This is a professional piece of work from the Darkhorse website, was formerly released as a graphic novel, and is probably one of the worst-kept secrets on the internet. (Why am I always last to know?) The story was adapted and abridged by (none other than) Ian Edginton, and the artwork is by (again, none other than) D'Israeli, both of whom collaborated on 2000AD's brilliant series Leviathan.

As you would expect, much of Well's original text remains intact, and the Edginton/D'Israeli combination just works so well. If you've not read it before, it's worth reading.

"No one would have believed that in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's ..."

You can almost hear Richard Burton's voice speaking the narrative.

Here There Be Monsters

Here There Be Monsters is the apt title of www.drewweing.com, the website of a very talented comic artist named Drew Weing. (Weing is pronounced with a long "i" like "wine" with a "g" on the end.)

There is loads to look at here, and much I haven't looked at yet, but what caught my eye initially was the comic series Set To Sea. Check it out, there is some good stuff here.

Apparently, these are original drawings by Bill Watterson, which have been animated into a cartoon. It's really well done. Italian with English subtitles.

The wallspankers graffiti gallery has some interesting stuff. I particularly liked some of the work by Reone, Rich and Ich. I haven't looked at them all yet.

Hand art

A bit like full-body art, where the artist paints the body of a model to simulate clothes, or make the subject seem to vanish into the background, but this involves painting just the hands to look like animals. These are good, and some of them are really good.

Comic Strip Artist's Kit (Redux)

This is an interesting blog entry for would-be cartoonists (such as Exotic Trousers' own Sim). It comprises a series of seven illustrative sketches by Carson Van Osten, a famous Disney artist who did many Disney Comic Books and created the famous "Comic Strip Artist's Kit".

Comicvine has a repository of pretty much all the heroes and villains from all the comic publishers you can think of. Worth a look if you're into this sort of thing.

Many of the more popular US heroes are covered in great detail, but lots of other favourites are left empty for readers to fill the details themselves, Wikipedia-style.
